Fourth phase UP polls begins

RTNN News Desk: The fourth phase of local body Union Parishad (UP) elections to 725 UPs has begun Saturday morning.

The voting began at 8am and will continue till 4pm without any break.

The Election Commission (EC) has taken all preparations to hold the polls peacefully in a festive mood. All poll campaigns remained stopped since Thursday midnight.

Members of the law enforcement agencies, including police, Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are working in the field and all election materials, including ballot papers and boxes reached the polling centers, EC sources said.

Election Commissioner Shah Newaz expressed hope that the fourth phase of UP polls would be more free and fair.

The law enforcers have been directed to be tough against the offenders of all levels, he said, adding that actions would be taken if anybody neglects duty.

A total of 3,245 chairmen candidates are contesting in the fourth phase of polls. Of them, 724 belong to Awami League, 619 to BNP, 156 to Jatiya Party, 42 to Jatiya Samajtantrik Dak (JSD) and 154 to Islami Andalon.

Out of 725 unions, chairmen have been elected uncontested in 33 unions. All of the elected were Awami League candidates. So far, the number of Awami League supported chairmen elected uncontested reached 150.

EC Secretariat Deputy Director Shamsul Alam said the law enforcers were active in the field for the two days before polls. They have been directed to maintain the highest caution to prevent violence, he added.

The EC has directed the outsiders to leave the polling areas to avert any unexpected situations during the election.

The government has declared public holiday in the election areas on the day of polling. Ban on traffic movement excluding the vehicles having stickers of the Election Commission (EC) has been imposed in the areas.
