AL ‘cadres’ capture most polling centres: BNP

04 June,2016

RTNN News Desk: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday alleged a massive vote rigging is going on in the sixth and last phase of the Union Council (UC) polls as the ruling party ‘cadres’ captured most polling stations as they did in other phases.

Speaking at a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi also accused the government of unilaterally turning the results of the all the sixth phases of UC polls into its favour by resorting to terrorism and using the Election Commission and administration, reports UNB.

‘As per the information we’ve received so far from different areas, ruling party men have captured most polling stations. Voters are not allowed to go to polling stations. Awami League cadres are stuffing ballots in favour of their election symbol boat through establishing a reign of terror,’ he said.

Balloting in the elections to 698 UCs under 82 upazilas in the 6th and final phase started at 8:00am and will end at 4:00pm without any break.

Some 3,200 candidates are vying for chairman posts, while some 30,000 others for member posts and reserved seats of the UPs.

Rizvi said the ruling party men established their control on almost all polling stations in Comilla, Barisal, Pirojpur, Mymensingh, Cox’s Bazar, Noakhali, Chittagong, Shariatpur and other districts soon after the start of voting driving out the agents of BNP candidates.

He also said BNP leaders and activists were attacked and harassed in many UPs to discourage and intimidate voters so that they do not go to the voting centres.

The BNP leader said the Election Commission is working in favour of the ruling party to ensure the victory of its candidates. ‘We strongly condemn and protest the role of the Commission.’

Rizvi said ruling party men not only ensured the election results in the UC polls in their favour bt also destroyed the election system and atmosphere.

He said they had earlier said the government’s motive behind holding the UC polls along party line was to give the one-party rule a final shape. ‘Our apprehension has now proved correct as the government buried democracy at the grassroots level too through the election.’

Rizvi also said the UC polls also exposed Awami League’s true colour that it is a party against democracy and election. ‘The UC polls also manifested that the government has made the country as an Awami League colony.’
