No trade union in EPZ: Commerce minister

23 October,2014

RTNN News Desk: The minister for commerce, Tofail Ahmed, on Thursday ruled out any possibility of allowing rights to associate in the country’s export processing zone, saying the government had pledged to the investors that trade unionism will not be practiced in such zones. ‘The government had committed not to allow trade union in the EPZ,’ said Tofail while talking to reporters at his secretariat office. The commerce minister came home back on Wednesday after visiting Brussels where he attended a programme on Sustainability Compact. He explained to the foreign buyers about the government’s position on the EPZ and that ‘the buyers were convinced.’ He said that they introduced labour welfare association instead of trade union in the EPZ.
