Youth beaten to death over alleged mobile theft

RTNN News Desk: A youth has been beaten to death by staffs of a water pump factory in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong over allegation of stealing a mobile phone from the office.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Malek, 28, son of Siddikur Rahman, from Hajiganj of Chandpur, said police.

SI Kamal Uddin of Sitakunda police station told the Dhaka Tribune that manager and several workers of a water pump factory picked up Malek from his residence around 1am on Wednesday over an allegation that he had stolen a mobile phone from the office.

Later, they beat him mercilessly resulting in injuries leading up to his death, after which his body was thrown on to the nearby road, said the police official.

Being informed by locals in the morning, police recovered the body from the road located in Sitalpur Chowdhury Bari Gate area.

Police, meanwhile, have detained five workers of the factory in this matter.

The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the SI.

Rifat Chowdhury, owner of the water pump factory, has been on the run since the incident.
