IS claims murder of Jhenaidah Hindu priest

07 June,2016

RTNN News Desk: The Islamic State claims that their members killed a Hindu priest in Jhenaidah on Tuesday.

"Amaq Agency of #ISIS reported that ISIS fighters killed a Hindu priest in Jhenaidah district of western #Bangladesh," US-based SITE Intelligence Group said.

In Jhenaidah, IS has claimed the murder of two homoeopathic doctors since January. The group said that their members had killed Chhamir Uddin Mandal on January 7 for converting to Christianity from Islam. But his family and the police said that he had switched back to Islam two years ago. The other, Abdur Razzaq – known as a Shia preacher, was killed on March 14.

Police discovered the throat-slit body of Gopal Ganguli, 64, in Mohisharbhagar area of Kaliganj as local people informed them spotting the corpse on Tuesday morning. Gopal was a priest at Noldanga temple under the upazila and used to perform rituals at different houses in the area.

Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Hafizur Rahman said: “Unidentified miscreants have sliced Gopal's throat around 9am after stabbing him. Only after proper investigation, it can be said whether there is a militant link with the killing.”

A police team was sent to the crime spot, OC also said.

The incident took place two days after Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of a police superintendent, was killed in Chittagong while she was taking her son to a school bus. The same day a Christian grocer was killed in Natore.

Earlier, Joggeshwar Roy, a Hindu priest at Sonto Gaurio Temple at Debiganj of Panchagarh, was killed allegedly by IS members on February 21.

The murder of Gopal is the 21st attack since IS made the first claim in September last year.

According to the claims, IS men have carried out the murder of seven people since April when the militant organisation officially announced that they had established a base in the country with a view to attacking India and Myanmar to avenge the persecution on Muslims in the region.
